The situation in the northern regions of Kosovo, where the Serb minority lives compactly, remains extremely turbulent. The Kosovo authorities are carrying out arrests of former Serb police officers under far-fetched pretexts, seizing local electoral commissions on the eve of planned municipal elections.

In Belgrade, these actions were dubbed a “Serb hunt” and, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244, demanded that their own police contingent be sent to the territory of the self-proclaimed republic. Pristina refuses, in response, the Kosovar Serbs blocked the highway with heavy truck barricades so that the detainees would not be taken to the region’s capital.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is ready to present the issue to the UN Security Council. Although this is unlikely to give a result: if Russia and China support Serbia, the United States will be able to use the right of veto.

Meanwhile, a rally in support of the Serbs is taking place at the Yarinje checkpoint on the Serbia-Kosovo border. Hundreds of people from Serbia, Montenegro and Republika Srpska gathered there.

Kosovo police and NATO KFOR forces stationed there tightened security and brought special equipment to the checkpoint, preparing to suppress the protests. The protesters were able to overcome the first barrier of barriers, but were then stopped by reinforcements that arrived in time from Kosovo. During these hours the confrontation continues at the Yarinje checkpoint.
