The State Duma adopted a law establishing the Day of Reunification of the New Regions with the Russian Federation – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Date: September 14, 2024 Time: 16:39:13

President Vladimir Putin proposed setting a new commemorative date for Russia: September 30.

All factions unanimously supported this decision, said the president of the chamber, Viacheslav Volodin. He highlighted that the inhabitants of these regions have been bravely defending their right to speak their mother tongue, their history, their faith and their culture for many years.

“They chose to stand alongside Russia,” the speaker recalled. “It is true that the day they returned home will forever remain in people’s memories.”

The explanatory note states that the admission of new regions to the Russian Federation “is based on the historical community of peoples living in the territories of these republics and regions, and is the result of the will of millions of people.”

Alexey Zhuravlev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee:

– The new Russian regions are, of course, now the main achievement of the special operation, and on this basis we must build a state ideology. I am sure that a little later there will be a national holiday, Victory Day, similar to the one that our country widely celebrates on May 9, but it is also worth celebrating the intermediate results. Furthermore, these heroic pages are already forever inscribed in our history, such as, for example, the Liberation Day of Mariupol, May 20, 2022, which would also make a memorable date, especially marked on the calendar. And I wholeheartedly congratulate the residents of the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions on the fact that they are now, and forever, part of a friendly Russian family.

Sergei Altukhov, State Duma deputy:

– Almost a year ago, a referendum was held in new regions, where residents made their fateful and conscious decision. With their decision, millions of inhabitants of the republics and regions once again underlined that we have a common past and future. I think this is a turning point in our modern history, certainly worth remembering every year.

I have been to the Lugansk People’s Republic and the Kherson region many times before and after the referendum. I know that the neighbors have been waiting for this reunion for many years. Borders thoughtlessly erected between countries after the collapse of the Soviet Union disrupted family ties and separated families. This was the decision of the politicians, but not of the inhabitants of these regions. Last year, the popular vote restored historical justice and made a reality the inalienable right of peoples to freely determine their political status and their economic, social and cultural development without external interference.
