In Afghanistan, the Taliban movement (recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia, its activities are prohibited. – Approx. BURO.) introduced a new restriction for women: now they are prohibited from working in non-governmental organizations, both local and foreign. Reuters writes about it.
The Afghan authorities explain this decision by the fact that some NGO employees did not comply with the Islamic dress code for women. The exact timing of the ban has not been set, the restrictions will remain in place “until further notice.”
The United Nations said the ban would hit hard humanitarian operations, which are now especially important because of the onset of cold weather. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Twitter that he was “deeply concerned” about the situation.
“Women play a central role in humanitarian operations around the world. This decision could have devastating consequences for the Afghan people,” Blinken added.
Previously, Afghanistan introduced a total ban on women’s education, including school. In a meeting with school principals, clerics and community representatives in Kabul, the Taliban announced that women are also prohibited from teaching and generally from working in an educational institution in any capacity.
