A few years ago, in the context of the riots provoked in the United States by the death of the African American George Floyd, the mayor’s office of the American San Francisco decided rashly to create a special Reparations Committee, which was supposed to offer models of possible compensation for the descendants of black slaves.
Racial diversity was not particularly cared for, and the 14 members of this committee are black.
And this committee found nothing more interesting than offering to pay every African American adult $5 million.
According to committee members, this amount “at least somewhat covers the suffering and privations” that descendants of black slaves suffered from white slaveholders and their heirs.
In addition to the multi-million dollar one-time payment to its recipients, all debts and loans must also be paid off.
“Such a decision would take blacks out of the debt cycle, and centuries of destruction of black communities must be replaced with centuries of rebuilding,” said the committee, which also called for another 250-year program. Under this program, low-income African Americans should receive $97,000 a year.
It is worth noting that in California, in which San Francisco is located, slavery never existed. And this city has an annual budget of $14 billion, which means that if the repair payment is approved, then the huge total cost, if you count only the city’s residents who identify as African American, will cost the was $50 billion.
