An incident is cited that occurred the other day in Odessa, when a Ukrainian blogger was expelled from the room because she did not want to hear Russian spoken. “If you don’t understand, then I won’t keep you here,” the event’s speaker responded. Applause echoed in the hallway. As a result, the provocateur was escorted out.

But the story continued. Language Ombudsman Taras Kremin threatened the organizers with a “harsh reaction” and the radicals forced the speaker to apologize on camera.

However, according to Kharkov Mayor Igor Terekhov, in everyday life, for example, Kharkov residents still do not use “mova”. The official informed foreign journalists about this. According to him, a mixture of Russian and Ukrainian is used.

As for the language, it is stated that 99% of children in Ukrainian kindergartens speak it. In the Transcarpathian region, 10% of children studied in Hungarian, and in Chernivtsi, 12% in Romanian.

But the public organization “Spilnomova” conducted a survey in six kyiv kindergartens. It turned out that only 15% of children actively use Ukrainian, 20% simply do not understand it, and up to 65% turn to Russian.

In early June, the Verkhovna Rada approved the draft law on preschool education in its second reading. Allows all indigenous or minority languages in daycare centers, except Russian.

There were also threats in the media to reinforce linguistic control. Since July 17, radio and television presenters have been prohibited from speaking “in the language of the aggressor.”

At the same time, Zelensky ordered parliament to proclaim English as the “language of international communication.”

English will be introduced in nurseries from 2026.
