The cleanliness of cities is a key factor in the habitability of a city. When there isn’t, it shows, and when the urban environment is cared for, citizens feel more satisfied with their municipality and perceive it as more pleasant to live in. Now that, in addition, we are in the final stretch of the electoral campaign, the municipal teams must know that the citizens take this facet of municipal management very much into account, which is, as we have pointed out, one of the most visible.

The Organization of Consumers and Users has developed a survey to find out the degree of satisfaction of citizens with the cleanliness of their cities. The results show that in two out of three of the 69 cities analyzed the sensation is of mediocrity in the management of municipal cleaning.

The total number of inhabitants surveyed was 6,863, who have valued a dozen aspects related to the cleanliness of their city. Likewise, they must include a general note to assess the state of the city, as well as give details by areas or specific problems that are considered relevant.

The dirtiest cities in Spain according to the OCU

In general, the large Mediterranean and southern capitals with a large influx of tourists have the lowest ratings, according to the OCU. The three worst in matters of public cleanliness are Palma, Alicante and Seville. They are followed by San Sebastián de los Reyes, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Barcelona and Madrid. Among the populations with the best cleanliness are Oviedo, Bilbao and Vigo as the cleanest cities in Spain.

The OCU also highlights the cities that have managed to improve since last 2019 by more than ten points. Guadalajara progresses up to 25 points, Jaén and Lugo, 18 points; Avila 16 points; and Alcalá de Henares, 15 points.

The cleaning problems that concern citizens the most

The problems that residents complain about the most are dog droppings on the sidewalks, dirt around the containers, graffiti and the general lack of cleanliness in the suburban areas.

These problems are usually concentrated in the most peripheral neighborhoods and the ones that citizens perceive as dirtiest, unlike the most central areas, which are also the most touristy and, therefore, the most attended. For example, Corea and Son Gotleu in Palma, the 3,000 houses in Seville, Cañada Real in Madrid, El Puche in Almería, etc.). However, there are towns where the city center is cited, such as Alcobendas, Lérida, Segovia or Soria.
