They came in large numbers, we counted: how much the flow of guest workers to Russia has grown

Last year, 3.47 million migrant workers arrived in Russia, 33% more than in 2021. And these are not only CIS citizens! Last year, the path to Russia was actively trampled by representatives of various countries, including those that are now commonly called “unsympathetic”.

This was found out by analysts from the FinExpertiza audit and consulting network. FinExperts took data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the border service and calculated that in 2022, 3.47 million foreigners came to work in Russia. This is 871 thousand people (33%) more than in 2021. But the indicators “before the pandemic” are still far away: in 2019, 4.09 million guest workers arrived in Russia.

– In 2022, the shortage of blue-collar workers, which is characteristic of the Russian labor market, only intensified. In the field of “labor specialties”, the proportion of foreign workers is traditionally high, the need for which is now even greater. Against the background of personnel shortages, the salaries of couriers, drivers, repairmen, warehousemen, loaders and builders began to grow. The Russian market has received additional attraction for foreigners due to the strengthening of the ruble, thanks to which earnings in terms of foreign exchange have increased significantly, explains the increase in the number of immigrants, President of FinExpertiza Elena Trubnikova.

More than half of the guest workers in 2022 came from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The top ten countries from which labor migrants actively traveled to us also included Turkey, China, and Vietnam (for more details, see “Counted Here”). Interestingly, the citizens of the states that supported the sanctions were also employed in Russia. Here is the number of migrant workers from “not very friendly” countries who came to us in the past year:

– Germany – 3.2 thousand people;

– Italy – 2.1 thousand people;

– France – 1.9 thousand people;

– Great Britain – 1.5 thousand people;

– United States – 978 people.

Yeah, not enough. But even before the known events, residents of Western countries (Moldova and Belarus are not counted) were not very eager to work with us. And in conclusion, a little exotic: last year a native of countries such as Mali, Chad, Cape Verde, Botswana, Vanuatu, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea came to work in Russia.

By the way, about 13 million foreigners visited Russia last year. It turns out that each quarter came for the purpose of employment. And three or four years ago, only one in eight came to us “for a long ruble”, and the rest came to see or visit the country. The main reason for these changes is that the flow of foreign tourists to Russia fell catastrophically last year. Do not ask why.

BY THE WAY

Where are they going

According to experts, the bulk of guest workers settle in the capitals and their surroundings. 25.6% of migrant workers are registered in Moscow, 15.1% – in the Moscow region, 12.8% – in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. Krasnodar Territory, Irkutsk and Sverdlovsk regions follow by a wide margin (about 2.5%).
