The area is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Ubinas, the most active of the country’s 400 volcanoes, is located 1,200 kilometers from the Peruvian capital of Lima.
In the last two days there have been 17 eruptions and about 170 tremors in the emergency zone. Since the beginning of this week, the volcano has spewed ash and gas at a height of 5.5 kilometers into the atmosphere, and a cloud of smoke has swept cities that are 10 kilometers from Ubinas, the Geophysical Institute of Peru reported, according to to the Geophysical Institute of Peru.
Numerous appeals from residents to the country’s medical institutions were noted. The victims have respiratory problems due to the ash and dust.
The last time Ubinas showed volcanic activity was in July 2019. Then, the ash from the eruptions, which lasted three months, reached a height of 8 kilometers above the crater and was dispersed within a radius of 250 kilometers. Although scientists predict that the force of the current eruption will be quite moderate, they cannot yet determine its duration.
