Thomas Bach is stepping down from his post at the head of the International Olympic Committee. He said he does not plan to seek re-election in 2025. Bach made a statement at the last IOC session, RBC writes.
“I have thought about it for a long time, discussed it extensively with my closest people and colleagues and have come to the conclusion that I do not want to extend my powers beyond the period provided for in the Olympic Charter,” Bach said.
Discussions on extending the term began in July. At that time, the commission decided to postpone discussion of amendments that would have allowed the German to continue in office until 2025. Bach has been a member of the organisation since 1991 and has headed it since 2013.
It was previously reported that Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg will perform at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. The ceremony will take place on August 18. We talk about it in more detail here.
