A US Navy spokesman said Operator First Class Daniel Swift died from injuries sustained during the missile attack.
“We can confirm the recent death of a US citizen. He was killed in action,” the US State Department commented on the death of a mercenary. “We have nothing more to add.”
Born in Oregon, Swift first enlisted in 2005. He fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, receiving a medal for the global war on terror. But in March 2019, he arbitrarily left the place of service: in his personal file, the note “deserter”.
Earlier, a mobilized Ukrainian soldier who was captured said he saw at least nine US mercenaries in Soledar. He suggested that the foreigners were part of the assault units, since they were armed with assault rifles.
Meanwhile, journalists from The Washington Post have calculated that almost three thousand foreign mercenaries are now on the territory of Ukraine. “Most serve in three foreign legion battalions,” the published article says.
