Tourism, green energy and health will be the engines of employment this year

Date: March 29, 2024 Time: 04:44:08

The number of employed persons registered during 2022 has reached maximums that have not been seen for 14 years. However, the rise in the unemployment rate, included in the Active Population Survey (EPA), in the last quarter of the year forces citizens to be wary of the evolution of the labor market in 2023.

In contrast to the layoffs that are occurring in large players in the technology industry, other sectors offer highly dynamic job creation. One of them is tourism, which is expected to leave the pandemic behind once and for all and generate a significant increase in jobs. But will not be the one.

From the Spanish Association of Human Resources Directors (ADRH), they recall that the high volume of investments that demand the green transition means that companies dedicated to the exploitation of renewable energies need to expand their workforces. In fact, according to the forecasts of the IRENA Renewable Energies and Employment: Annual Review 2022 report, in Spain the renewable energy market could generate 468,000 accumulated jobs throughout the decade. Globally, it could reach 38.2 million jobs in 2030.

Another aspect that María Sánchez, director of people at Ifema Madrid and member of the ADRH, has an impact on, is the consequences that the aging of society will have on the labor market. The change in the population pyramid will generate a greater demand for work in care of the elderly, such as day centers or nursing homes, which will also become an important engine of employment.

Lastly, and although it may seem contradictory due to the ‘tech layoffs’ that are the order of the day, demand in the technology sector is expected to increase, since they are transversal jobs that generate jobs in any type of company. “The marketing sector has become an indispensable piece in the promotion of services, brands or products, something that makes it a sector in clear growth,” says Sánchez.

In fact, this area marked by constant digitization, and therefore by change, is one of those that will most seek profiles with ‘soft skills’, adaptation skills and interpersonal relationships that will facilitate work without being technical skills. In turn, Pedro César Martínez Morán, director of the Master’s Degree in Human Resources at Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICADE, explains that teleworking has accelerated the demand for this type of skills by firms, since it increases communication channels and Forms also requires quick learning and a very flexible personality. “The world changes very quickly and you have to adapt to it,” says the professor.

This lack of adaptability is what the professional world traditionally demands from the educational one. “The mismatch is a constant. The companies complain that from the educational sector we do not generate enough knowledge for them to be incorporated quickly, but it is not so easy to adjust to the constant changes”, explains Martínez Morán. So self-learning is one of the most valued skills in job interviews.

“The educational system is not enough to instruct the professionals that companies demand”

Specifically, from the ADRH they point out that it is not just technology companies looking for highly qualified personnel that cannot be found. There are many other areas that suffer from the shortcomings of the educational system to train employees with highly specialized skills. “The educational system is not enough to train the professionals that companies demand and that is a problem that we have to deal with every day,” says Sánchez.

Therefore, in such a changing context, as far as job development is concerned, workers are in demand who provide extra motivation and contribute to the good atmosphere of the team. In fact, according to Antonio Alcaraz Marcos, Atelodis ETT Account Manager, companies seeking to expand their workforce are capable of making their demands more flexible and taking charge of the technical training of a potential employee if he shows great commitment and knows how to function during the personal interview.

The demand for personnel in the most traditional trades is growing

Antonio Alcaraz Marcos speaks of a great deficit suffered by the traditional sector. The companies demand officials such as electricians or the metal sector, however, the member of Atelodis speaks of the “fever of ‘titleitis’” has led to a deficit of this type of personnel. “The most operational part has been running out of supplies and we find that there are no people to fill these positions.”

The solution that the companies have found has been to cooperate with institutes and carry out training contracts for students to later become part of the workforce. This professional reality leads firms to improve the working conditions of these positions and thus attracts personnel.
