Former US President Donald Trump accused Congress of trying to prevent him from winning the 2024 election, recalling that he had already won a landslide victory over the Democrats once.
“The bogus charges brought by an unelected and highly one-sided committee have already been tried in a second attempt at impeachment. I won convincingly,” Trump said, commenting on the activities of the special congressional committee investigating the storming of the Capitol in January of last year.
The day before, the Democratic-led committee asked the US Department of Justice to bring charges against Trump for sedition, conspiracy to defraud, and obstruction of Congress.
The American media point out that the recommendations of the special committee are not binding, but if they are adopted, they can significantly complicate the political life of the former head of the White House.
Thus, this is the third serious attempt by the Democrats to eliminate Trump: the first impeachment attempt was unsuccessfully announced in 2019, the second after the politician’s resignation of the president’s powers in 2021 due to the capture of the Capitol.
