Two agents from the Civil Guard’s Central Operations Unit (UCO) Economic Crime Unit have refuted the conspiracy thesis advocated by Marcos Benavente, a self-proclaimed “money junkie”. The agents who appeared as expert witnesses in the first Part J Trial of the Taula case were the investigators responsible for analyzing the audio recordings provided by the then Provincial Deputy and today Minister Generalitat Valenciana Rosa. Perez Garijo and Marcos Benaventa’s father-in-law, businessman Mariano Lopez.

Explosive tapes depicting the conspirator’s alleged corrupt practices allowed the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the UKO to pull the string of the framework case of the Taula case, broken into a dozen separate parts. The “money addict” after a sudden change in the strategy of cooperation with Anti-Corruption claims that he manipulated the audio recordings and that his statements to the UCO were forwarded.

The agents said that, in response to questions from Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Pablo Ponce, they said that in September 2014 the Valencian Civil Guard command had given them a memory device from the complainant Rosa Pérez Garijo. “The moment the documentation and flash drive reach us, we digitize them in Madrid on our UCO server,” said one of the researchers. In the second installment, UCO receives, with “guarantees of proper printing,” another device and computer delivered by Mariano López, former father-in-law of Marcos Benavente.

So, in the first statement, the businessman claims that the audio recordings were at his home and that “he provided them voluntarily.” “He believes that these were audio recordings recorded by Marcos Benavent and that they were not manipulated,” one of the agents recalled. The defense of the “money junkie” by penalty taker Juan Carlos Navarro attempted to question the custody of the records. “The same audio recordings provided by the applicant Rosa Pérez at the beginning, and the same recordings by Mariano [López] they are the same, they have the same denominations and the same sizes,” the agents of the armed institute replied.

Despite attempts to defend the “money addict”, witnesses assured that Benavente “under no circumstances” said at the beginning of the investigation that he manipulated the audio recordings. On the contrary: “He admits that he did them, and gives them explanations.” In addition, UCO researchers influenced that “there is contextual information that cannot be inferred from the audio recordings themselves, and it is provided [por parte de Marcos Benavent]”.
