These boats are being prepared in addition to the large barge Bibby Stockholm, which is currently being refitted to accommodate 500 asylum seekers on the south coast.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the barges would “relieve pressure on local communities” and free up space in hotels used to house migrants, pledging “broad engagement with the authorities on the issue of barge accommodation.”
Sunak said those who came to the UK via unwanted routes should be detained and deported to Rwanda or another country deemed safe as soon as possible. However, refugee status should not be taken into account.
Critics say the government wants to keep out unwanted immigrants through strict laws. In fact, we are talking about an asylum ban.
