– Patients expect from the doctor not only qualified actions, but also sympathy. But unfortunately, they don’t always succeed. Empathy, as well as communication skills, must be taught even in the student bench, – Elena Dyachenko, director of the competence center, a candidate for psychological sciences, is sure.

The ability to communicate with patients, by the way, is appreciated not only by patients, but also by employers. According to research conducted by the center, the main psychological quality of the future doctor, the leaders of the clinics recognized patient orientation. A doctor’s ability to conduct a dialogue with a patient on the basis of evidence-based medicine, and not under pressure from authority, is important for a person to be able to assess risks and prospects after visiting to a doctor. Next in priority is a doctor’s stress resistance, the ability to meet the limited admission time.

Only last year, a quarter of the students who entered USMU in the fall, and this is more than two thousand people, decided to master additional skills in the center of professional skills in parallel with their studies. Hundreds of aspiring doctors have already passed the empathy test. Medical students are tested not only with the help of simulators or computer programs. Actors acting according to specially developed checklists (scenarios) participate in the process. In Yekaterinburg, 900 actors have been trained, prepared to play a demanding and capricious patient in classes and exams.

In the meantime

At the end of last year, the Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation published guidelines with phrases, the use of which is a “profound error in communication” with patients. Doctors were advised to abandon the faceless addresses “female”, “male”, replacing them with the name of the patient. Also, it is recommended to exclude the phrases “your problem”, “what still does not suit you”, “I don’t know who told you this” or “you are confusing something”. The list contains up to a dozen provocative phrases. Doctors are prohibited from using diminutives and “patient-blame phrases.”
