In an interview with the Axios information portal, the minister said that such a scenario would lead to a financial crisis and catastrophic consequences for the United States, reports TASS.
“Of course it makes me nervous. That would be devastating. It’s a disaster,” Yellen didn’t hide.
The organization recalls that on January 19, the minister warned Congress that the Treasury had initiated emergency measures, since the United States had almost reached the debt ceiling set at 31.4 trillion dollars.
What are these measures? Yellen believes that the most important thing is that it is required to abandon a number of categories of budget spending, postponing them “for later.” Second, it is necessary to act “without delay” in the case of the agreement on the increase of the ceiling of the US national debt, or to suspend this ceiling altogether. This is important so as not to undermine the credibility of the United States.
