The masterpieces of Aivazovsky and Kuindzhi, which were kept in the basement of the art museum, as well as in the house of the director of the institution, were transferred to the Donetsk Museum of Local Lore.
Much more tragic is the fate of the exhibits of the Mariupol local history museum. It was set on fire by the Nazis during their retreat. Museum staff have literally been digging up exhibits from the ashes ever since. Almost completely survived only the library, which contains books dating back to tsarist times. Andrey Latkin, the curator of the museum fund, told RG about what other relics were saved, it was he who first began these “excavations”.
