Thomas Schaefer, who heads Volkswagen, confirmed the work on the project of a super-affordable electric car at the presentation of the concept of another “popular” model – ID.2all, which will cost 25 thousand.
“It’s in our blood, we have commitments and we’re working hard, the details will be announced in the coming months,” Schaefer said of the future model.
Obviously, ID.1 will get the same platform as ID.2 – MEB Entry. This means that the unit will be front. This is not bad if we talk about the practicality of a car with this arrangement: the rear overhang is empty, therefore it makes it possible to organize a full-fledged trunk. For example, an ID.2 with a length of just over four meters has a volume of 490 liters.
So what are you going to donate? Of course, the list of options will be altered – without matrix headlights and other delights of a car with a higher rank. The second in order, but no less important saving point (in the context of an electric car) is the battery: instead of lithium-ion batteries, more affordable lithium iron phosphate batteries can be used. Joint engineering, a high percentage of unification and a single production site will also help save money: Cupra (Seat) and Skoda are developing their entry-level electric cars.
When to expect the Volkswagen ID.1: the electric car is expected to appear no earlier than 2026.
