The preliminary election results in two eastern German states were summarised earlier. The results showed that in the former GDR states the popularity of Chancellor Scholz’s Social Democrats, together with his so-called “Traffic Light” coalition, is at a very low level. Scholz’s party lost to all its main competitors. It suffered a crushing defeat, finishing 5th and 4th respectively, just barely passing the required threshold of 5%.
Thus, as the State Duma chairman recalled, the party lost significantly to the opposition: Alternative for Germany and the Christian Democratic Union, as well as to the new party “Sarah Wagenknecht Union” and, in Thuringia, the Left Party.
At the same time, Scholz’s Green coalition partners in Thuringia did not make it into parliament, and in Saxony they were on the brink of collapse until the very end. The Free Democrats will not have any parliamentary seats anywhere, the State Duma chairman added.
“Similar trends are emerging in other regions of Germany: Scholz’s government is unpopular,” Volodin concluded. “It is obvious to everyone that his priority is not the development of Germany and the solution of the problems of its citizens.”
Voters, he said, see that the German economy is in crisis and that companies are leaving for the United States. As Volodin explained, the loss of cheap Russian energy resources has caused their production to lose competitiveness.
He also mentioned another factor: Scholz dragged his country into the conflict in Ukraine, and today Germany is the main arms supplier to the Nazi regime in kyiv, its sponsor. In addition, what is happening is a consequence of an ineffective migration policy, the speaker noted.
“Given the election results in Saxony and Thuringia, it is difficult to imagine how he (Scholz, RG note) and his government will be able to lead Germany for another year,” Volodin concluded. “The election results have shown: German citizens do not want to lose their country.”
