Vox’s motion of no confidence fails, which only adds a former Cs deputy

Date: June 7, 2023 Time: 05:12:09

No room for surprise. The Congress of Deputies has rejected this Wednesday the motion of censure presented by Vox with the economist Ramón Tamames as a candidate for Prime Minister. After two days of debates, the initiative has only had the votes of the 52 Vox deputies and the added support, surprise, of the Mixed Group deputy Pablo Cambronero. This parliamentarian was elected by Ciudadanos, but left the formation after an internal crisis. In any case, to prosper the motion of censure needs the absolute majority of Congress (176 votes).

Against it, it has found the opposition of 201 deputies, from the PSOE, Unidas Podemos, ERC, Ciudadanos, PNV, Bildu, Junts, PDeCAT, Más País, Compromís, CC, CUP, BNG, PRC and Teruel Exists, as well as the former deputy of Podemos Meri Pita, who joined the Mixed Group. This represents a reproduction of the same positions that these parties held in the motion of no confidence led by Santiago Abascal in 2020, but this time there have been more abstentions, a total of 91, coming from the PP and its allies from Foro and Navarra Suma.

The deputies of United We Can Marisa Saavedra and Roberto Uriarte, and the parliamentarian of Bildu Isabel Pozueta, who were absent and have not taken advantage of the telematic vote, have not voted.

Sixth motion of no confidence in democracy

Thus ends the sixth motion of no confidence since the promulgation of the 1978 Constitution, and the second presented by Vox in this legislature. Yes, it has had a point of difference with the rest: It is the first of the first in democratic history that has been headed by an independent candidate, with no organic link to the party that proposes him. In any case, the economist and professor Ramón Tamames, 89, has a long political career behind him. Former leader of the PCE in the Transition, vice mayor of Madrid with the socialist Enrique Tierno Galván (1979-1986), founder of Izquierda Unida and later a militant of Adolfo Suárez’s CDS.
