– The proportion of people who quit smoking has doubled since 2013 – today every fifth person can boast a victory over addiction compared to 10 percent in 2013, – said Kirill Rodin, director of work with public authorities of VTsIOM.

The adoption in Russia of the federal law “On the protection of the health of citizens from the effects of secondhand tobacco smoke and the consequences of tobacco use” took effect. Already in the first year, the proportion of Russian smokers decreased by 6 percentage points and rose to 35% (compared to 41 in 2013). Then the rate of decline in smoking slowed down a bit, to 1-3 percent per year. The proportion of those who smoked a pack of cigarettes or more per day fell the most. In 2023, they were 17% compared to 24% in 2013. Regular smoking also decreased from 17% to 13%.

Last year showed the following results: 58% noted that they smoke with the same intensity as a year ago. 20% say that they started smoking more and 21% admitted that they smoke less.

Smoking in Russia is rather detrimental to men, it is they who are most prone to this habit: every third (31%) smokes at least one pack of cigarettes per day. Among women, they are six times less (5%).

But men are more likely to successfully quit: 27% versus 12% among women.

Russians who smoke, for the most part, would like to get rid of a bad habit. Thus, two thirds of smokers (67%) declared their desire to overcome nicotine addiction during the VTsIOM survey. 10 years ago they were 57%. 30% do not want to quit smoking. 50% say they have never smoked. Women (69%), citizens with higher education (57%), as well as young people aged 18-24 (59%) and Russians over 60 (61%) are generally indifferent to smoking.
