The hosts of the three-day BRICS summit in South Africa made sure that none of its participants could doubt their presence at an extremely important global event: the security “red zone”, a large number of police officers, armored personnel carriers, personnel around the perimeter and, of course, patrolling fighter jets over Johannesburg.
Brazilian president surprises summit participants with hope
The noise of the planes became a unique background for a small group of musicians who, in fact, were the first to receive the BRICS leaders at the very entrance of the Sandton Conference Center. With their peaceful melodies, they seemed to try to show everyone that they were fighters, but here they gathered to talk mainly about peace and prosperity.
“China stands firmly on the right side of history and firmly adheres to the principle that the highest ideal is the creation of peace,” the Chinese leader fully agreed with them. And yet, he added, “today, Cold War thinking persists and the geopolitical situation is bleak.” And that means fighters don’t fly in vain.
In turn, Vladimir Putin noted that the BRICS “five” have rightfully established themselves on the world stage as an authoritative structure.
“We are all unanimous in favor of the formation of a multipolar world order that is truly just and based on international law, respecting the key principles of the UN Charter,” the Russian leader stressed.

– The BRICS countries should promote the interests of the “Global South” and ask industrialized countries to meet their obligations… We demand a fundamental reform of global financial institutions; For this we created the New Development Bank. It has already demonstrated its ability to mobilize resources for the development of our countries – affirmed the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, making it clear that for the hosts the most important question remains the investment that their country needs today, like fresh air.
But Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to use the summit as a platform to promote his country. “Very soon, India will become a five trillion dollar economy. There is absolutely no doubt that India will be the engine of global growth in the coming years.”
Finally, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva surprised many by bowing not to the BRICS, but to the G20 in Johannesburg: “We reject the new colonialism. We hope that many problems of the Global South will be resolved at the G20 summit and, in general, increasing the role of Africa on the world stage.

The main decision of the BRICS summit.
The accredited journalists at the BRICS summit, which in the end numbered almost two thousand, expected an important decision from the negotiations in Johannesburg. And he announced it after the meeting of the BRICS leaders in a reduced and expanded format.
– We have agreed on the issue of enlargement, we have a document that we have adopted, which sets out… principles, processes for considering countries wishing to become members of the BRICS, – said South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor .
True, some experts and diplomats were sure that today, after the results of the summit, the specific countries that will become new members of the BRICS will already be announced. But in the end, obviously, they decided to postpone this decision.
At the same time, it is unlikely that the BRICS name will be changed after the expansion.
– So that? Yes, and what to change? If you continue to receive first letter from new countries, what will happen? However, in the end everything is possible. Have your own idea for a new name? – One of the members of the Russian delegation answered me with questions about when the decision on the new name would be made. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred to me.
