Carrying out procedures and consultations online is the daily bread and there are more and more possibilities of presenting official documentation, taxes and other requirements through the electronic offices. Simply, it is necessary to have an electronic identification system that allows us to certify our identity before the administration or any other private entity.
There are several methods available and one of them is the FNMT Digital Certificate for physical persons, which is nothing more than an official electronic certification, issued by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre and Real Casa de la Moneda, which links a physical person. to subscribe to the system with electronic signature verification data and, therefore, to confirm your online identity.
Uses of the digital certificate
It is, in other words, a digital document that contains the identifying data of this person. This system is also known as Citizen or User Certificate. This system allows online identification and the exchange of information online with other people and organizations, whether from the Public Administration or private companies, always with the guarantee that it will be private and without (in principle) fraud.
For example, some of the procedures in which this digital certificate can be used are:
Presentation and liquidation of taxes. Presentation of appeals and claims. Completion of data from the population and housing census. Electoral. Reported actions. Electronic signature of official documents and forms.
Any Spanish or foreign citizen, of legal age or an emancipated minor who is in possession of their DNI or NIE, may request and obtain their digital certificate free of charge. The procedure can be carried out online or in person at the Royal Mint and consists of downloading a file that will allow the identification of the person on that computer.
How can I renew the digital certificate?
The digital certificate has an expiration date and, therefore, it is necessary to renew it every four years, which is its validity. To do this, you will have to enter the FNMT website and install the software provided by the Factory itself. It must be downloaded in the same browser in which the digital certificate has been installed and through which the renewal will be requested.
Once the program has been downloaded and the process completed, the user will receive a code that can be used an hour later to download the certificate, installing it again. All this procedure can be started with a margin of 60 days before the expiration of the current digital certificate.
