This exposition is the result of the work of scientists from the Russian State University for the Humanities, who, during their expeditions to the provinces, paid attention to the icons made and decorated literally from what God sent. Foil, candy wrappers, wax, paraffin – they made bunches of berries from it. The ornament has its own history – as a rule, it was applied with the help of cartridges from weapons or for this the bottoms of glasses were used. Again, this happened not because the teachers did not have anything sacred, but because there was a serious shortage in the villages. We adapted as best we could. And even he managed to keep his “handwriting”.

“Each region had its own traditions of decorating such icons, for example, in Yelets craftsmen made some kind of lace paper napkins, and in the south-west of the Gorki region, now Nizhny Novgorod, craftsmen were fond of decorate the icon with large handmade flowers. In this sense, each icon, of course, was unique, “says Dmitry Antonov, curator of the exhibition, director of the Center for Visual Studies of the Middle Ages and Modern Times at the University State Humanitarian of Russia.

Interestingly, during expeditions to the Nizhny Novgorod villages, researchers found icons decorated even with pioneer bows – perfect flowers were obtained from colorless red material.

However, the exclusivity and value of such icons is not yet obvious to many, they complain at the University of Humanities, often they are simply burned. Therefore, two years ago, Dmitry Antonov and his colleagues set out to save the naive inheritance. Everything went into action: expeditions, publications, books, work with regions. Experts dream of inspiring the provinces to create at least small collections of Soviet craft icons.

“It is very important that in our regions there is such a heritage that has not yet been evaluated and studied, if it is returned, if it is spoken, then every large town can receive a bundle of its memory and some pride,” Antonov is sure.

The exhibition “Soviet icons: religious artifacts from the era of persecution”, which opened at the State Museum of the History of Religion, should also arouse public interest in such an unusual phenomenon of folk art.

“We all know that there was an era of persecution of Christians in the first centuries, Byzantine iconoclasm, if we find icons of those times, it would be a sensation,” the curators said at the opening of the project. the same, there was a struggle for seventy years with religion, people at risk of life and freedom by improvised means created icons, this is a unique cultural heritage.

If the icons, materials and tools that were used to make decorations were presented to the exhibition by the RSUH, then the curators of the Museum of the History of Religion tried to reflect the context. It turned out strong.

“At first, we see ruined and crumbling icons that suffered during the campaigns, then posters on an anti-religious theme, and only then, in fact, those Soviet icons that began to be created in the new conditions,” the curators explain.

The exhibition will remain in Saint Petersburg until the end of March. Then maybe other cities will be able to see it. See and add – many, if you dig in the attics and warehouses, there are homemade Soviet icons. Selling them is unlikely to succeed, it’s not an ancient art, but it’s not worth burning them as useless, give it to scientists, now it’s their bread.
