Why visit the Rubens exhibition?

The filling of museums in different countries with the quantity and quality of exhibits directly depends on how rich the country was at the time when certain artists were discovered. For example, the great Vermeer was discovered in the middle of the 19th century, and at that time most of his works were bought by the United States. There were different periods in Russia, and almost no one collected works until the beginning of the 18th century. Then there were gaps in the 19th century and the middle of the 20th century. But the other side of the coin is that often our collectors bought not very famous authors, guided only by their own good taste, and many times they found real pearls.

We pay special attention to the works of little-studied artists, of whom one or two authentic works have survived to this day. Such works are of exceptional interest to science, since they serve as the only standards for a true understanding of the creative image and the potential identification of the surviving heritage of a particular rare painter. Therefore, a special place in the exhibition is occupied by paintings by the still life painter Nicholas Kave (only one painting by the artist’s signature has survived, and it is presented at the exhibition) and masters of the “figurative” genre – Jan de Duyts and Joanna Vergauwen (note, a woman artist, which was a rare occurrence in the 17th century).
