Winemakers will need to create vineyard passports KXan 36 Daily News

Date: June 18, 2024 Time: 12:51:34

In 2022, for the first time in recent history, the area of Russian vineyards exceeded 100,000 hectares, where 890,000 tons of grapes were harvested (752,000 tons in 2021). The production of grape wines in 2022 increased by 9.7% (to 32.7 million decalitres), sparkling wines – by 25.2% (to 16.2 million decalitres). But the prospects for growth remain enormous: almost half of the wines on the Russian market are imported. Photo: EPA

The document is largely technical: it eliminates the loopholes that have arisen over the three years of the law on viticulture and oenology. Therefore, a serious inventory of vineyards is implied. Winemakers will need to create a grape plantation passport and submit it to the federal self-regulatory organization (SRO), which will submit these passports to the Ministry of Agriculture. Rosselkhoznadzor will conduct a vineyard inventory at least once every two years, counting each bush.

The law specifies the technologies allowed for the production of wines. For example, “circulation” and “expeditionary” liqueurs for the production of sparkling wine can be made not only from sugar, but also from concentrated grape juice.

In addition to the variety, place of origin and vintage, a bottle of wine must contain information on the type of drink and the manufacturer.

The concept of “ordinary wines” is also specified. Beverages are now considered to be those that continue to be bottled after January 1 of the year following the harvest. Now “wines and fortified wines that enter bottling and registration without aging after 90 days from the end of the fermentation process” will be included. This will take into account imports from countries where the crop is harvested at other times of the year.

The label and back label will change slightly. Therefore, in a large size of 12 points it will be necessary to write only the year of harvest and the place of origin. The grape varieties from which the wine is produced can be indicated smaller, but not less than eighth size.

The law will enter into force on September 1, 2023, except for the provisions related to the inventory of vineyards, the rules for the production of wine products, new requirements to inform consumers. These rules will come into effect on March 1, 2024.
