Bella Montoya reportedly woke up and began to pound after spending five hours in her coffin at a funeral home in the town of Babajoyo, some 200 kilometers southwest of the country’s capital, Quito. Her son, Gilberto Barbera Montoya, told The Associated Press that he has not yet received any report from the authorities on the medical explanation for what happened, and warned that “things will not continue like this.” He added that the deceased’s sister tried to officially identify the doctor who pronounced her dead.
The remains of Montoya, a retired nurse, are in the same funeral home where she woke up. According to her son, Bella Montoya will be buried in a public cemetery.
Ecuador’s Ministry of Health said last week that a special committee had been formed to review how the hospital is issuing death certificates.
