Woman rescued after 132 hours under rubble in China

A woman was rescued today in the Chinese city of Changsha, who spent six days under the rubble of a building that collapsed on April 29. The woman, who is trapped for about 132 hours, is the tenth survivor of the tragedy, according to state media. So far, five people have died and a dozen more are missing.

The rescue team combines traditional methods and the latest technology to find signs of life under the rubble. Thus, as emergency situations expert Liang Buge explained, rescuers resort to hitting, screaming and trained dogs, while drones and vital signs detectors are used to search for survivors.

The authorities arrested the owner of the “self-built”

At least nine people have been arrested in connection with the collapse, including the owner of the building, charged with violating building codes and other offences.

The eight-story “self-built” building, which underwent modifications to the block structure, contained shops, a restaurant, a cafeteria, a family hotel and apartments, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered an investigation into the events and launched a national campaign to reduce the risks associated with makeshift buildings, as what happened in Changsha is not an isolated incident.

There have been several building collapses in China in recent years. In March 2020, a hotel collapsed in the southeastern province of Fuirang, killing 29 people. A few months later, in July, 17 more people died under the rubble of a building in the Jiangsu tourist area.
