Work calendar 2024: in which communities is Good Friday a holiday?

Date: September 12, 2024 Time: 19:38:53

The year 2024 has holidays marked on the work calendar in Spain. Many workers are waiting for the arrival of Easter to enjoy a few days of rest, the first long weekend of 2024, once the Christmas holidays have passed. The first holiday of this celebration comes on March 28, Maundy Thursday, which will be a holiday in some autonomous communities. For its part, Good Friday (March 29) will be a holiday throughout the national territory. In addition, some regions add Monday, April 1, Easter Monday, as a non-working day. Then, we will have to wait until the month of May to have the following non-working days. The 2024 work calendar includes a total of 12 holidays, of which 9 will be celebrated jointly in all the provinces of Spain, the same number as this year. Two other local holidays are added to these 12 days, making up to a total of 14 holidays.

In 2024, Maundy Thursday is not a holiday in several autonomous communities, therefore all the cities and municipalities that are part of these territories will not enjoy it either. The Valencian Community and Catalonia do not give their workers a break on this day, but they do add Monday, April 1, as a holiday.

As for the rest of the holidays scheduled for 2024, there are 9 common festivities that are celebrated throughout the country:

March 29: Good Friday (Friday). May 1: Labor Day (Wednesday). August 15: Assumption of the Virgin (Thursday). October 12: National Holiday of Spain (Saturday). November 1: All . Saints (Friday). December 6: Spanish Constitution Day (Friday). December 25: Nativity of the Lord (Wednesday).

There are other common holidays that the autonomous communities can move to another day. This has happened with Thursday, March 28 (Holy Thursday), which will be a holiday throughout Spain except in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, but not with Friday, January 6, Three Kings’ Day, which all communities have decided to maintain.

Among the faculties recognized by the autonomous communities is also the possibility of replacing the rest on the Monday following the national holidays that coincide on Sunday with the incorporation of other traditional ones, as well as the option of celebrating San José (March 19). . ) or Santiago Apóstol (July 25) in its corresponding territory.

Thus, December 9 (Monday following the Immaculate Conception) will be a holiday in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Murcia and Melilla; Thursday, July 25 (Santiago Apóstol) will only be a holiday in Cantabria, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra and the Basque Country, and Tuesday, March 19 (San José) will only be a holiday in Murcia and the Valencian Community.

The ‘bridges’ of 2024

The celebration of several holidays on Monday or Friday, therefore close to Saturday and Sunday, will allow this new year to have some longer weekends than usual in Spain as a whole. This is what happens with this Monday, January 1, Friday, November 1 and Friday, December 6.

In the communities that have chosen to celebrate Holy Thursday (March 28), which is almost all of them, there will be a four-day long weekend, and in five communities (Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja) this long weekend will be five days since they have decided to also give Easter Monday (April 1) as a holiday.

In addition, those workers who can afford to take a day off could extend the weekend due to the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin (August 15) on Thursday.

In Catalonia and the Valencian Community, in addition to the 12 National Paid and Non-Recoverable Holidays, a Recoverable Paid Holiday has been Established, Which EU Means If Workers Enjoy That Additional Holiday, They Will Have to Make Up for Hours Not Worked.
