According to the writer, the country is now uniting, reaching its full height, and this picture is not in pastel colors: it looks stern and harsh. “What else can we do, how to protect ourselves, just survive? Just straighten up,” Anastasia Kovalenkova is sure. “I am happy with the way our country, our people behave, but I am outraged by them, those who have done it. They left. That is why they are there and I am here.”
Kovalenkova mentions hatred of the USSR as another reason for Russophobic sentiments among creative people: “Many hated the Soviet country so much that they threw their love for Russia overboard.”
Kovalenkova herself is a true Moscow intellectual. Her grandmother is the famous poetess and military correspondent, author of the famous poem about Kosmodemyanskaya “Zoya” Margarita Aliger, her grandfather is the composer Konstantin Makarov-Rakitin, who died in the first days of the Great Patriotic War. The writer’s mother is Tatyana Makarova, a popular children’s poet in the USSR, and her father is the artist Sergei Kovalenkov.
Anastasia understands the psychology of creative people better than anyone else, but she will never be able to accept an anti-Russian position.
“I would be here even if I didn’t agree with the country’s path,” the writer says. “For me, Russian is an adjective, I am attached to my country: my grandmother, the poet Margarita. Aliger was also always absolutely devoted to Russia and would still be by my side today.”
