Yakutia’s mammoth cemetery has revealed its secrets – Rodina

Date: July 23, 2024 Time: 01:54:30

Scientists discovered more than 156 woolly mammoth skeletons in the Berelekh River Valley in Yakutia. The discovery was made by researchers from the Institute of History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Arctic and Antarctic Research in St. Petersburg.

According to the results of the studies of the “mammoth valley” or “mammoth cemetery”, published in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews (QSR), remains of human habitation homes and processed tusks were also found in this place.

Traces of human habitation indicate that most of the skeletons were moved here intentionally. At the same time, radiocarbohydrate dating of the bones showed that some of the animals found were already present here even before people appeared in these places.

Archaeologists have suggested that the massive accumulation of bones is not associated with the death of animals either from natural causes or as a result of large-scale hunting. Most likely, miners accumulated the bones here and processed them here over time.

Thus, bone spears made of tusks, knife blanks and kitchen utensils were found near the “cemetery”.
