According to Zakharova, the very formulation of the question – who won the debate – is “a bit far-fetched.”
“Let’s imagine the situation differently, let’s look at the bigger picture. Here’s the Titanic: powerful, very expensive, hyped up… On board the same Titanic there is a fight between two famous fighters, I don’t know, boxers, kickboxers or someone else, jiu-jitsu,” Zakharova suggests. And so, at the end of the fight, people start arguing about who won.
“Does it matter? There are 15 minutes left before the iceberg,” says Zakharova, referring to the American Titanic.
She compared the debates more to a show than to a serious political event, because the candidates often contradict each other and, consequently, are not responsible for their words. People from other countries follow the electoral race in the United States only because a significant part of the debate is devoted to the global agenda, in particular to “who, how and to what extent” the United States will “punish” with sanctions next time, Zakharova concluded.
