The truth is that Ghost-type Pokémon have a much more disturbing origin than you might imagine, which sets them apart from any other species. While some Ghost Pokémon are based on the concept of spirits, or as the name suggests, ghosts, not all of these types are necessarily Pokémon that have previously died. In the Pokémon universe, some of these beasts may be created from some kind of spiritual or supernatural energy that manages to manifest itself in the physical world of humans.
However, there are a few Ghost-type Pokémon, such as Yamask or Cofagrigus, that have been described in the Pokédex as either Pokémon that were previously human or Pokémon that turned to stone upon death. In that sense, it can be understood that these particular Pokémon were, at some point, living beings that died and whose spirits somehow turned into Pokémon.
That is, while the birth of some Pokémon may be associated with death (as contradictory as it may sound), not all of these ghostly beasts are necessarily dead Pokémon. Either way, it’s still a disturbing origin, so those who choose to take the risk of raising these creatures are brave.
