Alcaraz beat Tsitsipas again at Roland Garros. The Spaniard already has 50 victories in majors

Date: July 18, 2024 Time: 03:40:18

The men’s singles quarterfinals at the French Open in Paris began on Tuesday, June 4. The last outing on the center court named after Philippe Chatrier was the match between the ninth racket in the world, the Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas, and the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, third in the ATP ranking.

At the start of the competition, the Roland Garros 2021 finalist defeated Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 7:6, 6:1, 6:1. Then, the Greek defeated the German Daniel Altmaier in four sets 6:3, 6:2, 6:7, 6:4. In round 3, Stefanos defeated China’s Zhang Zhizhen 6:3, 6:3, 6:1. And in the round of 16, Tsitsipas won a resounding victory over Andrei Rublev’s attacker, the Italian Matteo Arnaldi (3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2). The 25-year-old athlete commented on his victory over the number 35 racket in the world in the following way.

“It was one of my craziest comebacks. He had the initiative the entire game, he was very annoying because I tried with all my might, but nothing came of it. Only thanks to his spirit was it possible to return. Even with 3:5 in the second set I felt that I could get back into the game, that I had the strength to turn the match around. The 4-5 break was the most fun I’ve had in tennis in a long time. I felt like I now had a chance and that the stands were for me too, and it was incredible,” Tsitsipas said in an on-court interview.

Note that the Paris Major is the most successful for Stefanos at the moment. Throughout his entire career, the tennis player achieved 26 victories in the French capital. For comparison, at the Australian Open, a Greek with Russian roots won 2 fewer matches. In the last four years, Tsitsipas has reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals three times (2021, 2023, 2024).

Alcaraz came through qualifying strongly, losing only one set in four matches. This happened in the second round match against the Dutch representative Jesper de Jong 6:3, 6:4, 2:6, 6:2. In other parties, Carlos did not allow himself these freedoms. Jeffrey-John Wolfe, Sebastian Korda and Felix Auger-Aliassime could not take any game away from the Spaniard. Let’s add that the two-time TBS winner has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open for the third consecutive year. Now Carlos is only 21 years old!

Alcaraz had an overwhelming advantage in personal matches: 5-0 (3-0 on clay). There wasn’t much of a fight in the first set. Carlos immediately took another’s serve and took the lead with the score 1-0. Let’s add that at the break point the athlete attacked sharply with his right and finished this play with a wonderful cross along the line. Then the tennis players held out until the end of the match. But in the ninth game Alcaraz broke again and took the set 6:3 in 35 minutes. Statistics: 8/6 for the Spaniard in clearances/unforced errors, 7/6 for his opponent. At the same time, Carlos has a very big game advantage, despite such close statistics: he wins almost all important points.

There was some intrigue in the second game. Alcaraz led with a break 3:0, but his rival defended himself in the seventh game 4:3. Then Stefanos equalized the numbers on the scoreboard: 4:4. In the end a tiebreaker was reached. The third racket in the world played very well with it, but Tsitsipas made a mistake and made several inaccuracies (including on set point, performing a shortened backhand towards the net, as in the opening game). Thus, Carlos had more success in the second set with a score of 7:6 (3). Statistics: 13/9 for the Spanish, 11/16 for the Greek in clearances/unforced errors. It should be noted that during the tiebreaker, Tsitsipas complained to the chair umpire about his opponent’s long moans after the blows. Aurélie Tourte only had to listen to Stephanos’ complaints.

In the third game, the players initially held serve. But this only lasted until halfway through the set. In the important seventh game, Tsitsipas failed and lost his serve at 30-0. The most annoying thing for the two-time TBS finalist is that he double-faulted on a break point. Alcaraz just had to keep the lead from him and he did. 6:3, 7:6, 6:4: this is the score with which Carlos defeated Stefanos. The representative of Spain achieved his 50th victory in the majors. On June 4, Jannik Sinner also reached this mark, with whom Alcaraz will have to fight to reach the final of the clay court Slam. Let us remember that it is the Italian who will lead the men’s ranking for the first time in his career starting next week.
