“Cherchesov said:” Do not stand like that! New details of Akinfeev’s penalty shootout with Spain

Gintaras Stauche told why Cherchesov insulted him at a crucial moment. And he remembered how he prepared Igor for the punches from Ramos and Aspas.

Five years ago, the Russian national team beat Spain on penalties and flew to the quarterfinals of the World Cup. This miracle would not have happened without Igor Akinfeev and his two saves in the penalty shootout.

A very popular expression is that penalty shootouts are a lottery, who is luckier. But in reality, there is a lot of work and hours of preparation behind the repelled blows. How did Akinfeev prepare for the series with the Spaniards? We discussed this with Gintaras Stauche, the goalkeeping coach for that Russian team, who now assists Stanislav Cherchesov at Ferencváros.

How did Stauche prepare for the Spanish?

– My job as a goalkeeping coach is not only to be responsible for the guys, but also to look at the opponent’s standards. Penalties, of course, too. When we found out that we would play against Spain, I sat down to analyze. I checked all the players who at least once in their career took a penalty kick. It took many hours because there is no service that has all the penalties. You have to look at everything really. That’s how I did it, I marked who hits more, who less. Then, in percentage terms, he calculated where and how they break through to give Igor all the information.

It is especially difficult with such preparation with those who over and over again deliberately change the direction of the blow during the execution. But there are also those who shoot naturally, for example, in the right corner after the previous penalty was taken on the left. Of all the players I saw, I ended up making a list of 12 Spaniards.

What is important to pay attention to when preparing?

― It doesn’t make much sense to pay attention to the penalties of players who shoot without pressure, for example, when the score is 3-0. Much more information is given by those shots that are made with a tie or in a situation in which the team dribbles a ball or loses. The degree of responsibility in such a situation is higher, and post-match sanctions are always high tension.

How was the penalty shootout in the match Spain – Russia Iniesta 1:0, Akinfeev missed Smolov 1:1 Piqué 2:1, Akinfeev missed Ignashevich 2:2 Koke 2:2, Akinfeev saved Golovin 2:3 Ramos 3:3, Akinfeev missed Cheryshev 3:4 Aspas 3 :4, Akinfeev standing

How did Stauche and Akinfeev decide to act on penalties?

– The day before the match, Igor and I sat down, I gave him a piece of paper with all the detailed information about each player. Initially I suggested that he take this piece of paper with him to the goal if it is a penalty. And he told me: “A steering wheel is uncomfortable, and so much tension. You better show me with your hands where to jump. So we agreed, during the series you can see that I am not hugging everyone, like everyone else, so that my hands are free. Initially, even Stanislav Salamovich told me for this: “Don’t stand like that.” And I say: “I need to show it to Igor!”

In general, almost all of us Spaniards hit as planned. Only in the case of Iniesta, Igor rushed and changed his mind at the last moment to no avail. The only exception is Ramos, with his penalty you have to stop until the end and wait for him to shoot next to you; only then will there be a chance to reflect his shot from the spot. In other cases, it’s almost impossible – it works just fine.

Aspas decisive penalty

– In the case of Aspas, the approach of the decisive penalty came in handy. I saw some penalties from Aspas at Celta, which he took in important situations when the score was 0-0 or 0-1, for example. And in such situations, he hit the corner to the right of the goalkeeper much more often, so Igor went there and broke. It’s great that Akinfeev managed to slow down the body a little, because Aspas shot closer to the center – one leg was enough.
