The avtomobilist literally survived the first Ural derby of the season and Avangard won against Sibir.
On September 4, 12 KHL teams entered the new season and played six games. Let’s briefly summarize them.
The day started with the Siberian derby, which Avangard played without its leaders. Even the absence of Reed Boucher, who has long since become a Siberian specialist, did not prevent the “falcons” from winning. It is worth noting the majority of the Club, whose effectiveness today was also not affected without its main stars: Stanislav Galiev and Ilya Reinhardt scored precisely in the “5 against 4” format. Only Georgy Belousov scored against Siberia, but he did it in a tennis style.

Nikolai Zavarukhin was even asked if he wanted to avenge his brother, who was removed from Traktor. The head of Avtomobilist said that for him it would be an ordinary match, but his club from Yekaterinburg won. “Auto” seemed to never end the playoffs, winning thanks to the same factors that brought it bronze: excellent special teams play and overwhelming dedication, which resulted in 30 blocked shots. “Traktor” outplayed its rival exactly three times (48:16), but Benoit Groux lost his first official match in Russia.

The game between two teams led by attack-oriented coaches was low on goals. At the end of the second half, Barys opened the scoring with a purely American goal: Wade Ellison was assisted by Will Butcher and Michael MacLeod. Neftekhimik equalised in the third half after a final move by Vladimir Bryukvin, and foreign player Jean-Sébastien Di secured the victory in extra time. On the other hand, it should be noted that the 18-year-old Congolese striker Joe-Christophe Muissa, who wore the number 99 on his back, made his debut for the team from Nizhnekamsk.

In Nizhny Novgorod, two former colleagues met: Igor Larionov and Andrei Kozyrev. The assistant left the former coach not only without a victory, but even without scoring goals. “Severstal”, in principle, helped the Nizhny Novgorod club a lot and during the match they were sent off three times for an extra field player, but this did not help “Torpedo”. Danil Aimurzin scored a double for the Cherepovets team, and Alexey Kruchinin, who left Torpedo under unclear circumstances, scored into an empty net. Let’s also note Alexander Samoilov, the hero of the end of last season, he started the new championship strongly.

The game in Balashikha took place in front of half-empty stands, and its most notable moment was Leonid Tambiev’s terrible blow to the head of the puck. The Latvian coach, however, was cheerful after the game and even smiled: perhaps two points are the best way to heal the scars. By the middle of the match, the “Admiral” was leading 3-0 and Vityaz’s pursuit failed even taking into account that the home team spent 18 minutes in the opponent’s half. The reason for optimism among the home fans is a beautiful goal and two points by Dmitry Buchelnikov in the first match.

After Nikita Gusev’s goal at the end of the first half, it already seemed that the summer-strengthened White and Blues would start the season with a win. However, things turned out to be much more complicated. Most of the game didn’t work out, and Colin Campbell scored against Dynamo in the minority. Shortly after, Nail Yakupov scored his first goal since November 17 last year, helped by the poor performance of goalkeeper Hunter Miska. The match ended with a very mysterious episode: Miska was replaced by a sixth field player, who did not enter the field, and Kunlun scored very easily into an empty net. The first sensation of the regular season took place in Moscow.
