“Earth Hour”: what is the meaning of the action and how to participate in it?

Date: September 14, 2024 Time: 14:24:08

People love to live comfortably, but we rarely think about how constantly running cars, factories, and gadgets affect the state of the planet. Air and water pollution, the disappearance of animals and plants are only a small part of what leads to our carelessness. Each person can contribute to a better world. For example, sorting garbage, giving things a second life or participating in Earth Hour.

“The Earth Hour campaign is a noble initiative. Its goal is to draw public attention to environmental issues and climate change.”

There are many different environmental problems today. The fact that none of the negative trends have been reversed is alarming. All environmental crises are getting worse. According to the latest report from the United Nations Environment Programme, we currently extract and use 106 billion tonnes of natural resources per year. In the 70s, this figure was 30, and at the beginning of the 20th century, 10.

What is Earth Hour?

The first Earth Hour event was held in Sydney in 2007. Since then, it has become a large-scale annual event bringing together people, businesses and governments from more than 180 countries.

Famous buildings and monuments are plunged into darkness for an hour, reminding us of the importance of taking care of the environment. Among them: the Eiffel Tower (Paris), the Colosseum (Rome), the Opera (Sydney), the Empire State Building (New York), the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco), the Royal Palace (Stockholm), the City Hall (London).

Russia first took part in the action in 2009. In the capital, the city hall building, Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Europe Square were taken offline. Every year the promotion is gaining popularity. This time Earth Hour will take place on March 23 at 8:30 p.m. local time.

The action is symbolic. It shows how a fairly large number of people can sacrifice a minimal amount of comfort to solve environmental problems. Man is accustomed to accepting the gifts of nature without hesitation. And all he can bear. With this action we have at least 60 minutes to think. And this is already an achievement.

The scale of Earth Hour is too small for us to count on any effect from it. It has a microscopic effect in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We spend more electricity with the transition of mobile devices to 3G, then 4G, 5G, etc. However, an additional reminder that there are many people in the world for whom environmental well-being is not just empty words will not hurt.

We tell you what everyone should include in their diet:

How to take part?

Participating in the promotion is very simple. It is worth starting with the main point: turn off all unnecessary electrical appliances and lights in the house for an hour. You can dedicate this time to yourself, your family or your friends: being alone, exchanging stories in company or playing board games by candlelight. This will not only strengthen your relationship, but also support the global environmental movement.

Some public organizations organize special events and conferences on the topic of sustainable development. Participating in them is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can help the planet.

The Earth Hour campaign is a reason to reconsider your habits and opt for a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Every step towards caring for the planet’s resources affects our future.

Why is it important to protect the environment?

The participation of people in initiatives and the inclusion of ecological habits in daily life is a key rule to protect our planet. Because it is important?

The earth has limited natural resources. Without responsible use, we run the risk of running out of them. Participation in environmental programs helps reduce consumption and promotes the conservation of biodiversity.

The problem of climate change is one of the most serious today. Taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support sustainable development will slow some of these changes.

Environmental pollution directly affects our health. Clean air, water and soil are essential to sustaining life. By actively participating in environmental protection, we care not only about the health of the planet, but also about our own.

How to implement environmental habits?

This process may seem very difficult at first glance. In fact, introducing a habit little by little is the key to success. This should be done without stress.

For example, a good starting point might be to participate in community cleanups once a month. Such events help clean the environment of trash and increase responsibility. Also here you are likely to find new friends and like-minded people.

Furthermore, green habits can be gradually introduced into everyday life. Start with simple things: eliminate single-use plastic, sort waste, use reusable bags and water bottles, replace conventional lamps with LED lamps.

Move little by little towards more conscious consumption. Buy products without unnecessary packaging, choose seasonal vegetables and fruits, reduce waste and try to repair things instead of throwing them away the first time they break.

Also, walk more often and cycle when possible. These habits are not only good for the environment, but they can also improve your physical health.

Also remember the importance of self-education. The more you learn about the environment, the more informed decisions you can make each day. Try to share useful information and your experience with friends and family.

Change begins with each of us. Remember that even the smallest steps are very important. The gradual introduction of environmentally friendly habits will help preserve our planet for future generations.
