England are being dragged to the Euro final by the legendary Dutchman. He already helped them win the penalty shoot-out.

The national teams of England and the Netherlands will play in the second semi-final of Euro 2024. One of the few Dutchmen who will wish victory to a team other than their own country on this day is the famous former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. The 52-year-old specialist is part of England manager Gareth Southgate’s team. How did he end up there?

The broadcast of the match between the Netherlands and England in the Russian Federation is available in the Okko online cinema.

Hasselbaink as a footballer needs no special introduction. Jimmy Floyd was remembered by fans not only for his long name, but also for his goals. He twice became the top scorer of the English Championship – in 1999 and 2001 (in the first case he shared first place with Michael Owen and Dwight Yorke), and once triumphed in the Copa del Rey sniper race. In total, the former striker played nine seasons in the Premier League, and the main club of his career was Chelsea. With the Londoners, Hasselbaink won the FA Super Cup and reached the FA Cup final. In addition, Jimmy Floyd reached the UEFA Cup final with Middlesbrough. The centre-forward also played for the Dutch national team – he played 23 matches, scored nine goals and took part in the 1998 World Cup.

Hasselbaink ended his playing career in 2008 and decided to become a coach, despite the fact that there are few top-level black coaches. Incidentally, when Jimmy Floyd took over at Queens Park Rangers, he was asked by journalists whether he felt an additional responsibility in promoting the issue of racial diversity. Hasselbaink’s answer to this question probably surprised many.

“No responsibility,” said Jimmy Floyd. “I firmly believe that I got this job because I performed well at my previous club and that I am the right person for the job. That is why the club gave me this opportunity. I am black and that will not change. I am proud to be black and that will not change either. That is all.”

Southgate’s player has unpleasant memories of the European Championship:

While Hasselbaink was studying to become a coach in order to obtain the necessary UEFA licences, he worked with Chelsea’s youth team. The Dutchman firmly established himself in England. In July 2011 he joined the Nottingham Forest staff and was assistant to five coaches for a season and a half. The former striker was gaining valuable experience but did not intend to stay on the sidelines forever and in 2013 he took the opportunity to strike out on his own.

In the summer of the same year, Hasselbaink took over Belgian side Antwerp, which was relegated to the second division. Jimmy Floyd tried to play attacking football on a limited budget and with young players in his squad. However, the team only finished seventh, failing to solve the problem of returning to the top, and the Dutchman refused to renew his contract.

In November 2014, the coach found a job in England – he was called by Burton Albion, who played in League 2. Most likely, footballer Hasselbaink would only laugh if he received an offer from a fourth division club, but for a novice coach it was a good choice to express himself. The Dutchman signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and achieved amazing results. In the same season, Hasselbaink won League 2 with Burton Albion, and the following season, when the coach left in December 2015, the team was in first place in League 1!

It was then that Hasselbaink was invited by Championship side QPR. He joined a team that was in 13th place and finished 12th with them. In the summer of 2016, the Dutchman was due to strengthen QPR’s squad in order to compete for promotion to the Premier League, but was sacked in November. The team dropped to 17th place and focused solely on the fight for survival. At a higher level, Hasselbaink did not fare well.

In September 2017, Jimmy Floyd returned to League 1 and took charge of Northampton Town. However, he stayed there for only seven months. He took charge of the team in last place, 24th, and in April 2018 he left them in the relegation zone (23rd). After a couple of failures, Hasselbaink took a break that lasted almost three years.

In January 2021, Jimmy Floyd returned to Burton Albion, where he developed his coaching career. At that time, the team was back in Ligue 1 and at the time of the Dutchman’s appointment was in last place, 24th place. Hasselbaink led Burton Albion out of the relegation zone and rose to 16th place. The result was repeated the following season. However, the coach then lost chemistry with the team. In September 2022, Hasselbaink was sacked and Burton Albion again remained at the bottom of the table. In seven rounds we only managed to get one point. At this point, the Dutch club’s career has stopped for now.

Hasselbaink was invited to the England national team by Southgate: they played together at Middlesbrough and played in the UEFA Cup final (there they survived a 0: 4 defeat to Sevilla). Jimmy Floyd’s position in the national team is called “technical development coach”. The British media wrote that the Dutchman’s task was to “hone the skills of English forwards”. His “clients” are Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, Ollie Watkins. Judging by the performance of Southgate’s forwards at Euro 2024, Hasselbaink is not doing well.

However, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham both highlighted Hasselbaink’s role after the penalty shoot-out victory in the quarter-final against Switzerland.

“Jimmy worked hard with us after training in case of a possible penalty shoot-out,” Foden said. – Hasselbaink is very experienced, he knows what he is doing. I think when I first came into the England squad there wasn’t really a coach to do it… I don’t think penalties are a lottery. We put in time and effort. We don’t want to make it a lottery. We hope that 1-2% will be in our favour.”

Southgate explained Hasselbaink’s involvement in the national team and admitted he understands the British desire to see only compatriots in the squad.

“Jimmy has great energy. He is very interested in the tactical side of the game. He is a typical Dutch student. I think he will bring a lot of value to our coaching staff.”

It is curious that Hasselbaink’s name was mentioned during the investigation into the corruption scandal in English football, which in 2016 led to the resignation of Southgate’s predecessor at the national team, Sam Allardyce. The Daily Telegraph reported that Jimmy Floyd, as manager of QPR, made a deal with a shell East Asian sports company to help it evade taxes in exchange for a fee of £55,000. During negotiations with representatives of this company, he was willing to enter into a conflict of interest: to sign his players for the club. QPR then supported Hasselbaink, saying that journalists did not provide “sufficient evidence”.

It’s time to end overtime in football

All in all, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, born in Suriname and raised in the Netherlands, has already had problems with the law. As a young man, he joined a street gang and spent three months in a juvenile detention centre for theft. After his release, Jimmy Floyd ended up in the youth team of the Dutch DVS; he was expelled for stealing a watch from a starting player. At the start of his professional career at Telstar, the striker had disciplinary problems, continuing to be in bad company. Leaving the Netherlands abroad and getting into major football saved him from the worst and now, together with Southgate, he wants to snatch away the Dutch dream of the golden Euro.
