Former world number one Simona Halep has been suspended until October 6, 2026 due to an anti-doping rule violation.
In October 2022, Halep was provisionally suspended from competition due to an anti-doping rule violation. The Romanian’s anti-doping test, carried out during her participation in the US Open, tested positive for the banned drug roxadustat.
The athlete stated that she had never thought about doping in her life. However, in May, the Anti-Tennis Authority (ITIA) brought additional charges against Halep, resulting in an independent court finding the Romanian tennis player guilty.
Previously, Halep repeatedly criticized Russia’s Maria Sharapova over the meldonium story, saying she would no longer like to shake her hand.
Halep, 31, has won 24 WTA tournaments in her career, including two Grand Slam titles: Rolland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019.
