House of the Dragon Episode 7 Leads to the Finale: Rhaenyra Turns Pawns Into Queens

The start of the second season of “House of the Dragon” was slow, but now the plot has picked up speed. The series, even without action, keeps you in suspense, due to bold moves, powerful dialogues and a constantly shifting balance of power. This is demonstrated by Rhaenyra: she remained an outsider for a long time, but in the seventh episode she took the initiative. What exactly happened?

More dragons in “House of Dragons”

There are only two major events in the seventh episode, but they are so elegantly depicted that it makes me want to praise the entire film crew. First of all, I would like to single out the performance of Oscar Tully, the young heir of Riverrun and the Riverlands. The young man had already met Damon and then seemed weak and insecure. But Lyanna Mormont has long since proven that young lords should not be underestimated.

During an important meeting, Oscar delivers a powerful performance. With just a couple of comments and actions, he earns the respect of his vassals and gives Damon a beating the mighty warrior has never experienced before. This mesmerizing performance proves once again that in the House of the Dragon, even a simple conversation can be intense and brilliant.

Even more interesting is Rhaenyra’s decision about the dragonriders. The move that turns pawns into queens is filled with drama, death, and disagreements with loved ones. All of this imbues the predictable arc with epicness and tragedy. Consider the look of a desperate commoner in Vertimore’s eyes or the charming flight over King’s Landing on the Silverwing. Thanks to the build-up that’s been going on since the beginning of season two, these scenes are stunning.

What happened in episode seven?

Rhaenyra meets with Addam, who became a Sea Mist Rider in the last episode. The man admits that the dragon made his own choice and swears loyalty to the Black Queen. It seems that even a commoner with the right blood and a strong enough character can ride the monster. Therefore, after a conversation with Misaria, Rhaenyra orders that the Targaryen bastards, including Hugh the Hammer and Ulf the White, be released from King’s Landing.

Rhaenyra’s allies are against this idea. According to them, dragons are sacred and commoners should not touch them. Even my son is furious. He knows he is a bastard, but his personal dragon has proven it to everyone: Jakeris is a true Targaryen. If bastards start flying around on fire-breathing monsters, the boy will lose his dignity.

Reynira begins the selection anyway. Most of the applicants die in the flames, but Hugh the Hammer and Ulf the White still become riders of Vertimore and Silverwing. Ulf even flies over King’s Landing: a surprised Aemond follows him, but retreats near Dragonstone. There he sees three new dragons with riders.

After Grover Tully’s death, his great-grandson Oscar becomes the guardian of the Riverlands. He gathers his vassals and tells them that they may not respect the unworthy Damon, but an oath is an oath. Damon needs an army, so he endures the insults and then executes Lord Blackwood; he took advantage of Rhaenyra’s husband and shed much blood. Now the Blacks have an army to defend Harrenhal.

At this point, Laris Strong takes care of the wounded Aegon: she assigns him a maester and teaches the Targaryen to walk again. So far, Aegon has accomplished little.

At that moment, Alicent leaves the castle and, with only one guard, goes into the forest. There the girl walks, bathes and finally finds some semblance of peace. It seems that life in the Red Keep is no longer to her liking.

Alicent walks the entire episode.

Even in the seventh episode, Daeron Targaryen is mentioned again. This is another son of Viserys and Alicent, who grew up in Oldtown and is rumored to have become kind and brave. His dragon Tessarion has grown and can fly with the rider. This strengthens the green army.
