How Cherchesov defeated the powerful Prime Minister of Hungary

On April 4, the Fidesz-Hungarian Civil Union party again won the parliamentary elections and its leader, Viktor Orban, became Prime Minister again. Orban has been the most popular and influential politician in Hungary for many years. And it was with him that Stanislav Cherchesov indirectly entered into a duel on the football field.

Orban has been a soccer fan since childhood. The love for this game was instilled in him by his grandfather, who told the young Viktor about the great Hungarian team of the 50s, about its main stars, including Ferenc Puskas.

Therefore, Viktor began to play football and even achieved some success – he played at the semi-professional level in the Felchut team in the third division. This is Orban’s hometown, located 40 km from Budashept.

In 2005, Orban created his own club – Puskas Academy, which was the Videoton agricultural club. But in 2012, the Academy entered the top division, for which a legal divorce was filed with Videoton. And in 2014, a football stadium with unique architecture was built in Felchut. You can easily find photos of this amazing stadium on the net. It is interesting that 1800 people live in the city, and the stands are designed for 3800 seats. The stadium was named “Pancho Arena”, also in honor of Ferenc Puskas. Pancho is Ferenc’s nickname in Spain when he shone with Real Madrid.

At the Hungarian Championships, “academicians” have achieved significant success in recent years: bronze medalists of the 2019/20 season and runners-up of the 2020/21 season.

Serious competitors. It is clear that not only Puskas Academy competed with Ferencváros. There was also “Kishvarda”, now in second place, ahead of “Academy Puskas” by only 2 points.

Cherchesov’s blood was spoiled by Paks (Ferencvaros lost to him 0:3 at home in early February) and Videoton. But challenging the team of mighty Viktor Orban was especially exciting. Head-to-head fights turned out to be difficult: Cherchesov won 1-0 against “Academicians” at home and drew 2-2 on the road.

In the last match of the championship on May 7, Ferencvaros lost at home to MTK – 0:3. You should not pay attention to this result: firstly, the title was won ahead of schedule, and secondly, Cherchesov strongly rated the team, giving the base a rest before the Cup final.

And he did the right thing: on Wednesday in the final, Ferencvaros defeated Kisvarda 3-0 and won the second trophy. But the Cup has not been given to Ferencvaros for six years. So this achievement is no less valuable than winning the championship.

It remains only to rejoice for Cherchesov: in the conditions of sanctions and blockade, he, as they would say in former times, carries the flag of Russian football high.
