Ukhtá won the first match of the final series against Gazprom-Yugra.

Two hours by plane from Moscow to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago is the small city of Ukhta. And the home team can present perhaps the most interesting surprise in Russian sports in 2024.

The Ukhtá football miniclub received professional status in 2011 and since 2015 has been playing in the Super League.

The Ukhtá team did not get the stars from the sky; His best result was fifth place in the regular season. However, in the 2024/2025 season, the Komi team has changed and surprises all fans.

Ukhta won the regular season by a margin (103 points to 91 for three-time Russian champion Gazprom-Yugra). It seemed that the daring leaders would be stopped in the playoffs, but so far this has not happened. Vadim Yashin’s team beat New Generation (3-1) and Tyumen (3-2), and in the first match of the final they defeated Gazprom-Yugra in a dramatic confrontation.

The match developed into a tense fight. We had to wait 12 minutes for the first goal: Nikolai Shisterov put the Gazoviks ahead. However, Ujtá knew how to recover and even went ahead: Lucas Pedala and Bruno scored. However, the main time after the penalty shootout ended in a 3:3 draw.

In the first overtime no goals were scored, but in the second the public saw a real suspense. Three minutes before the final whistle, Ujtá took the lead thanks to the efforts of Bruno and Roman Karelin, but the opponent responded with an accurate shot from Andrei Ponkratov (5:4). Although, that was not all. Pedala scored a hat-trick, but Shisterov’s return goal kept the intrigue until the final seconds. “Ukhtá” still held on and achieved the first victory of the series by 6:5. The Ukhtá team has three more victories left to win the historic title.

“The game is very emotional. It’s fantastic that we won, but this is only the first game. This is a good start. Nothing more,” said Ukhtá coach Yashin.

This final is special for Sergei Denisov. He now defends the colors of the Ukhta Club, but recently played for Ugra. Before the first game, he spoke the words that probably encouraged his teammates to achieve success: “We want to win the playoffs. You know, they don’t remember the second-place teams. Only the winners are remembered. I hope we go down in history.”

“Ukhta” is getting closer to making history.
