In Tavares’ debut match, Spartak defeated Rostov on penalties. Selikhov took three penalties!

The RPL Winter Cup has started.

THE “SPARTAK” STILL FAR FROM ITS “OFFICIAL”

We continue to monitor the readiness of Russian teams for the resumption of the season, and tournaments like the RPL Winter Cup only help us in this. Even a hypothetical ranking psychologically prepares the players to be more attentive to the results and therefore to the individual episodes.

Naturally, it is not worth taking the lineups too seriously yet, but gradually the base of the teams takes a logical shape. And from this point of view, we will be observing it. In this regard, it is worth noting that both newcomers from Spartak Tomas Tavares and Alexis Duarte remained on the bench, as did Alexander Sobolev, who was replaced by Shamar Nicholson not for the first time at the training camp. Well, Alexander Maksimenko in the first half with Selikhov in the second – this is remarkable.

In general, the composition of Spartak looks very far from what we will see in the season. There are still no Victor Moses, Christopher Martins, Nail Umyarov and Quincy Promes. In fact, the only major players on this list are Georgiy Jikia and Roman Zobnin.

But the Rostovites are much closer to the truth: Sergey Pesyakov in the gate, Maxim Osipenko in the center of defense, Danil Glebov and Daniil Utkin in the center, Nikolai Komlichenko and Khoren Bayramyan in attack. The rest of the players have Valery Karpin more or less a class, so they are quite easy to trade.

ATTENTION NIKOLSON AND IGNATOV

Karpin’s team appeared in exactly the same way we remember it from the autumn part of the season: 4-3-3 with Glebov in deep midfield, high pressing, vertical attacks down the flanks and serves to Komlichenko. In the first minutes, the more well-played Rostovites had some territorial advantage, but it quickly faded away.

The great Spartak imposed a fight on the rival in the middle of the field. Probably, the choice of Ruslan Litvinov, Daniil Denisov and Roman Zobnin played a big role in this, each of whom has experience in defense. This rigidity in martial arts gave them the necessary edge, however the Muscovites lacked creativity in combined play.

Only Nicholson and Mikhail Ignatov stood out. The striker scored three brilliant sharp passes – to the same Ignatov, Daniil Khlusevich and Anton Zinkovsky – however, in the first offside case. On the other hand, a couple of times Mikhail broke into the zone between Evgeny Chernov and Maxim Osipenko in a run and received penetrating passes from his teammates in time. It’s a pity that Zinkovsky, mentioned above, made his run more interesting in the episode when he reached Ignatov’s position on the right, but found nothing interesting on the left.

TAVARES AND DUARTE WILL HELP IN THE ATTACK

It’s interesting how differently coaches use players in these games. If Karpin made several permutations during the break and prepared the main replacements for the second half, then Guillermo Abascal left only Khlusevich during the break, whom Tavares, who made his debut, replaced already during the second half. Despite the presence of three forwards in profile, the rojiblanco scheme began to look more like the 4-5-1, that is, Pavel Meleshin advanced much higher than his teammates.

The second half turned out to be no more significant than the first, only now Rostov looked more preferable. A couple of times Komlichenko opened promisingly in the penalty area, a couple of tackles in the penalty area looked dangerous. And Spartak recalled the run by Pavel Meleshin, who ambushed an imprecise pass in his own half (the episode ended with a clash with Sergei Pesyakov) and Keith Balde’s predictable shot in the middle.

As for the newcomers Spartak Tavares and Duarte, we only note that both of them are very focused on playing the ball in someone else’s half of the field. The Portuguese was not too fond of intense runs on attack. Probably due to the fact that he entered the field for almost the first time after that serious injury received in May of last year. The Paraguayan surprised by the fact that in one of the episodes he bounced with a partner and scratched on the same line with the attackers. He is sure that he will also be delighted to support the attacks, especially when the rojiblancos will be inferior on the scoreboard.

LEVNIKOV EXPLAINS THE SOLUTION

It is curious that at the end of regulation time, for the first time in this tournament, the right to request a VAR replay was used. Kirill Levnikov came up to the monitor, watched the replays and, standing under the microphones, loudly approved the initial decision not to call a handball penalty in the Rostov penalty area.

A very interesting experience, when the referee, having watched several repetitions, chewed his decision: the defender went to tackle, the hand first leaned, and then reflexively shot. Verdict: unintentional handball.

The game itself ended in a natural goalless draw. According to the tournament rules, in this case, the penalties expire immediately. The Spartacists were more successful in it, for which Selikhov should be thanked, who dragged the blows of Yegor Golenkov, Dmitry Poloz and Stepan Melnikov. Wall! He scared Viktor Melekhin so much that he stained that final blow himself. That is, the goalkeeper conceded only once out of five shots from the “point”.
