Good fantasy is rarely filmed in Russia. This genre is painfully complex – it requires a creative world, decent graphics, memorable characters. If something is missing, the project falls apart immediately. Therefore, it is nice that the authors of The Librarian challenged themselves and filmed a worthy project. Of course, there are enough shortcomings in the series, but fantasy has long been no better in Russia.

“Sometimes a word hits harder than a bullet”
Characteristic of the local world in magical books. They are unpleasantly written and have an exhausting plot, so you want to drop them immediately after the introduction. But if you get over yourself and read such a novel from start to finish, you’ll gain a cool skill for a while. For example, become incredibly strong, be able to control people with your voice, or endure any pain.
Six such works are known, but there are also rumors of a seventh book of Meaning. Supposedly, it turns a person into a demigod. Unfortunately, no one could find her.

An unusual world is built around magical books. There are organizations that store books here – they don’t tell ordinary people about the artifacts and fight among themselves. There are bandits from disintegrated libraries who burn novels and kill readers. There is a powerful council of observers, where each member weaves intrigues and dreams of power.
All this makes The Librarian a simple Game of Thrones. Heroes constantly betray each other, alliances crumble, villains snap out of a stalemate. It is interesting to delve into the relationships of organizations and follow the conspiracies.
It is important that we look at the scenario through the eyes of a novice. The main character Alexei Vyazintsev was engaged in acting, dreamed of a career in Hollywood and had not even heard of books. But his father was a librarian and unknowingly dragged his son into the conflict.
As a result, the viewer is shocked along with Alexei when he learns about the factions of prostitutes and grandmothers from the nursing home. And do not think that they were added for fun – the series begins with a brutal battle with old women, where you clutch your head from tension.

However, there are downsides to the script. What are the exits, where the heroes constantly rely on chance and stupidity of the villains? If the opponents talked less and shot in the head, they would win quickly.
Particularly shocking is the episode when the bandits catch the heroes, and then the whole crowd leaves the base, leaving only one person who must kill the heroes, burn the book and at the same time solve all the problems of humanity. Can you guess how this adventure will end? Unfortunately, there are many such ridiculous moments in the series.

The show is extremely violent.
The series is based on the novel of the same name by Mikhail Elizarov, which was definitely inspired by the work of George Martin. Where else can you get so much love for killing your heroes!
The authors do not spare the viewer at all. Did you like a pretty girl? Say goodbye to her. Did you find great allies? They will not reach the end. Are you glad that some characters are not involved in the world of books? The villains will come to them.

At the same time, many of the massacres are prohibitively cruel. The heroes pour blood on the walls, pierce the villains with spikes, tear them apart, break bones. The more brutal episodes will make sensitive viewers uncomfortable.
The rules by which libraries resolve conflicts on the battlefield add even more passion. The fighters take up fancy melee weapons and fight from wall to wall. At the same time, the fights are well staged: pirouettes with clubs and tasty hits on the spot, except that the blood looks too unnatural.

Efremov holds the bar, but other actors are more memorable
The main role was played by Nikita Efremov, known for “Tetris” and “Patient Zero”. There are moments when the actor is clearly overacting. His tongue-in-cheek speech after the first fight and his big speech before the council seem too forced.
Fortunately, at other times you believe the hero. At first, he convincingly panics at the sight of dead bodies, but later gains confidence and becomes a proper leader. Efremov is especially good in the finale, where his character reaches the pinnacle of power. It is unlikely that the actor will play the role of Vyazintsev in the list of the best, but at least he was not mistaken.

The main star seems to be Evgenia Dmitrieva, who plays Margarita Selivanova, the head of a major library. She skillfully keeps secrets, expresses emotions with a single glance, and radiates strength even in a desperate situation.
However, there are also unmistakable flaws in the cast. For example, one of the allies is played by Mikhail Troinik, and he completely failed. Whatever an actor does, it goes wrong.

The Librarian: Is it worth watching?
If you love fantasy, give The Librarian a try, at least for the setting and cutthroat plot. Most importantly, don’t expect a masterpiece, and at least sometimes turn a blind eye to logic problems.
