The British lost in a firefight.
The quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics in field hockey ended dramatically for the British men’s team. The British, who played a significant part of the match for the most part, lost to the Indian team in a penalty shoot-out. British goalkeeper Ollie Payne tried to repeat the trick of his football colleague Jordan Pickford at Euro 2024, but the referees prevented the attempt to cheat.
The British were hoping to win their first medal in field hockey since 1988 in Paris. And the match went off with their advantage. But that was largely due to the fact that Amit Rohidas received a straight red card, which is quite rare in this game. An Indian hockey player hit his opponent in the face with his stick while fighting for the ball. The Indian team players expressed outrage at this punishment, but the referees’ decision did not change.

The main period of the match ended in a draw, and in the penalty shoot-out the Indians were stronger, winning 4-2. It was in the penalty shoot-out that a controversial episode occurred: British goalkeeper Ollie Payne was studying tips on his tablet about how the opponents were taking shots.
The referees noticed this when the score was 2:1 in favour of the British team: while the British hockey player was taking the penalty, Payne went to the bench, where the tablet was, and calmly studied the tips. One of the referees demanded that the British coach take off the device. He started to argue, but eventually complied. After this episode, the British players collapsed, and the Indian goalkeeper, PR Srijet, was magnificent.
The score is 4:2 in favour of the Indians, who continue to fight. And for the British, the Olympics are over. Perhaps if Ollie Payne drank water from a water bottle with clues on it, like Jordan Pickford did at Euro 2024, no one would notice anything. But it was impossible not to notice such blatant “cheating”.
