Kazakhstan is looking forward to Euro 2024! Will the Russian coach write his name in history?

Among the heroes of the selection are legionnaires of the RPL.

The Kazakhstan national football team has a good chance for the first time in history of being in a major tournament. Magomed Adiev’s team is in second place in qualifying group H for Euro 2024. After three games, the Kazakhs scored six points. What is the reason for the successful start of Kazakhstan? How was football lived in the country before? We say.

Until December 1991, Kazakh players played for the USSR national teams, and also played for the Kazakh SSR team in the USSR Peoples’ Summer Spartakiads. On June 1, 1992, Kazakhstan played its first international match, with the Turkmenistan national team (1: 0). And at the Central Asian Cup in 1992, the team took first place. The Kazakhs held their official debut meeting on June 14, 1996 – they beat Qatar (1: 0) within the framework of the qualifying phase for the Asian Cup. This victory was the only one in the group with Qataris and Syrians, and Kazakhstan was left without a major tournament.

Then the Kazakhs took part in the qualifying rounds for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, as well as the Asian Cup – 2000. And they did not succeed anywhere. Although in the qualification for the 2002 World Cup, Kazakhstan had a good chance of reaching the final stage of the national team (it lost in the group to Iraq in additional indicators).

In the year 2000, the Kazakhstan Football Federation considered that it was necessary to move from the Asian region to Europe. The process took two years. On April 25, 2002, Kazakhstan was admitted to UEFA. Due to the change of association, the “newcomer” did not take part in the qualifying tournaments for the Asian Cup and the 2004 European Championship. And then – continuous pain. Kazakhstan started in the European team in 2004 as part of the 2006 World Cup qualification. Result: 12 matches, 1 draw, 11 losses, goal difference – 6:29. Moreover, such horrors did not happen, but there was no tangible progress either.

A lot has changed in 2022, when Magomed Adiev led the national team. Previously, the 45-year-old Russian worked for Shakhtar Karaganda, and then he was entrusted with the main national team. Kazakhstan, under his leadership, unexpectedly won a group in Division C of the Nations League. Kazakhs were higher than Azerbaijan, Slovakia and Belarus. Great result! The Kazakhstan team will start the next draw for the League of Nations in Division B, where it will face more serious teams. However, the success of domestic football was influenced not only by Adiev, but also by the players themselves. The Kazakhstan championship is growing and with it the players are progressing, regularly participating in European competitions. There are several foreign players in the national team, the main ones being Nuraly Alip (Zenit), Baktiyor Zainutdinov (CSKA), Yan Vorogovsky (Molenbeek, Belgium) and Marat Bystrov (Akhmat).

Obviously, the progress of football in the country was facilitated by the transition to Europe (recall the recent talk about Russian football in the AFC).

The Kazakhs started the qualifying round for Euro 2024 unsuccessfully, losing at home to Slovenia (1:2), while leading on the scoreboard during the match. But already at the next meeting, Kazakhstan performed a miracle. In Astana, Magomed Adiev’s team scored a decisive victory over one of the best teams in Europe: Denmark. In the 35th minute, Danish striker Rasmus Heilund scored a brace. But in the 73rd minute, Zainutdinov launched a comeback, converting a penalty. Then a long-range shot from Askhat Tagybergen’s masterpiece and the 89th-minute game-winner from Abat Aimbetov, who headed the cross in from the side. One of the best games in the history of the Kazakhstan team.

Magomed Adiev

head coach of the Kazakhstan national team

“This victory is a credit to all Kazakhs and I am grateful to everyone for believing in the team. A special thanks to our players. They fought to the end and showed true character! I am glad that we were able to bring them joy and emotions that will be remembered for a long time and will become part (I’m sure!) of a great story.”

In mid-June, Kazakhstan had already beaten San Marino (3:0). Next in line is an important game against Northern Ireland. To continue the fight for the ticket to the Eurocup, the Kazakhs must win. There is too much density in your qualifying pool. Four teams have six points each after three rounds (Denmark, Kazakhstan, Finland, Slovenia). Also, three points in the piggy bank for Northern Ireland. All the fight for two tickets ahead. But each mistake strongly rejects the teams from reaching the Eurocup.

After the collapse of the USSR, only three teams from among the former Soviet republics participated in the European Championships: Russia, Ukraine and Latvia. Kazakhstan has a good chance of joining this list. During the 21 years of being in UEFA, soccer in the country has taken a great leap. The task is to secure it by entering a major tournament.
