Kvyat’s most offensive encounter: Russian broke through and crashed car at 24 Hours of Le Mans

Dmitry Zakharchenko June 11, 2023, 13:45 Moscow time

Two crews of Russian pilots got off at the same place.

For Daniil Kvyat, the debut marathon “24 Hours of Le Mans” ended ahead of schedule: the Russian had an accident and crashed the Prema team prototype. The damage to the car turned out to be too serious, the crew fled the race.

The daily marathon is still going on, but we can already summarize the results of the performances for both Kvyat and another Russian – Vladislav Lomko. For his crew, the race is over too.

No. 63 broke through, but didn’t break through

Daniil Kvyat’s crew before the start of the race was considered one of the contenders for victory in LMP2: at each of the previous stages of the WEC World Endurance Championship, the crew of Prema No. 63 was among the leaders and would have won in the Algarve if it weren’t for the safety car.

The race at Le Mans was started by Kvyat – the Russian got off to an excellent start and moved up to second from fifth. However, a fragment of the Cadillac hypercar crashed on the first lap and hit the Prema prototype, Daniil began to lose his pace and had to pit early – the mechanics removed the excess from the car, repaired it, but the crew returned to roll for 19th place and was already behind the leader of the circle.

Instead of the Russian, first Dorian Pen got behind the wheel, then Mirko Bortolotti, and by the eighth hour, the pilots of the Prema No. 63 were in 12th place. On the night shift, Kvyat continued to break through: another hour late, the crew was already in the top 10, and at the time of a major accident with the participation of the contenders for victory, at the 13th hour, it was in the top. 5. In this incident, the #7 Toyota hypercar crashed, leaving two LMP2 prototypes and a GT car wrecked. Meanwhile, a safety car entered the track, Kvyat’s team trailed the leaders by just 18 seconds with more than half the distance remaining before the finish line.

Unfortunately, shortly after the restart, Daniil had an accident and crashed the car. In the Porsche turn, the Russian flew at high speed to the stop, from the impact the car bounced off the opposing barriers and rolled backwards onto the racing canvas with a broken rear end. Kvyat was not injured in the accident, but this 24 Hours of Le Mans lasted less than ten for him.

The Lomko crew fought for the podium

A little later, in the 13th hour of the race, the crew of Vladislav Lomko had an accident in the same place. Rechad de Gerus led the No. 47 Cool Racing to fourth, the team safely avoiding the chaos of the early segments and taking third place in the night phase of the race, continuing the tactical fight for a podium spot.

On a slippery surface, 19-year-old de Gerus was unable to keep the car at the entrance to the same Porsche turn and crashed it. They took her to the pits, the mechanics were ready to repair and continue the race, but it was no longer possible to bring the car to the finish line – the crew issued a recall.

For Lomko, the season will continue on July 16, with the second round of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) 4 Hours of Le Castellet in France, and Kvyat a week earlier on July 9, the Monza 6 Hours race. , the fifth of seven WEC events in the 2023-season.
