In the 1/2 final, Daniil can play Stefanos Tsitsipas.

On Thursday, May 18, at the Masters in Rome (Italy), the last men’s quarterfinals will be played. World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev and German tennis player Yannick Hanfman, ranked 101st in the ATP rankings, were the first to enter the court. Before the quarterfinals, Medvedev, being the top seed, played three matches in the tournament, dropping only one set in them. And it happened in the third round, when the Spanish Bernabé Zapata-Miralles (31) was the Russian’s rival. So Daniel won a strong-willed victory – 3:6, 6:1, 6:3. But with Alexander Zverev (19), Medvedev finished in two sets: 6:2, 7:6. Although such a struggle, of course, cannot be called simple.

Medvedev’s entry into the quarterfinals, generally speaking, was not a surprise. A top 3 player made it to the top eight in the tournament. What’s so surprising about that? At the same time, it is good that the Russian, on uncomfortable ground, managed to come close to his best result at the Masters on clay. And where, in Rome, where before that he had three defeats in three games! But Hanfman was not expected to be seen at this stage. The German performed successfully in qualifying, and in the main draw he pleased his fans with brilliant victories. In this regard, it is worth noting the match of the second round, where Yannick beat the ninth racket in the world Taylor Fritz in two sets, and the match of the fourth round, where Andrei Rublev (6) failed, the match ended with a score of 7. :6, 4:6, 6:3 in favor of his opponent.

Hanfman is 31 years old but has no ATP titles yet. In addition, he has only been twice in the final. It was a long time ago, but on the ground: in Gstaad-2017 and in Kitzbühel-2020. And this season, the German has only reached the semifinals once, in Houston in April. Medvedev had never played his current opponent before. Despite the not too high status of the opponent, the Russian on the eve of the fight was not going to relax. “I saw something of Hanfman’s match and also his third set against Cecchinato. He is playing well now. In my opinion, he already played well in Houston and Madrid, he just didn’t make it to the final or something. His advance to the quarterfinals from qualifying is due to playing at an excellent level, so I have to be on top to try to beat him, ”Daniil is quoted by the ATP press service.

At the same time, 1995 Davis Cup finalist Andrei Chesnokov considered Medvedev the clear favorite in the matchup. “Medvedev is playing better and better with each match. To discourage the player, as Hanfman did in the match with Rublev, I don’t think Yannick will succeed against Medvedev. Daniil has the advantage in the match with Hanfman. He must win, ”Chesnokov said in an interview with the“ Championship ”.

But 2016 Olympic doubles champion Elena Vesnina spoke more carefully. “Hanfman beat Andryusha Rublev, it’s a great feeling. Very athletic, strong German. He has powerful serves with a good overall game. Daniel won’t be easy. When you play someone for the first time, you don’t know the opponent. We can say that this is a cat in a poke. For Daniil there will be a bell for the German to beat Rublev. You need to tune in with this tennis player in a special way and show high-level tennis from the very beginning. It will definitely not be an easy road,” Vesnina said in an interview with the Championship.

Medvedev led the ATP Champion race! How did it happen and what’s next?

At the beginning of the match, the tennis players exchanged breaks, and Medvedev brought the opponent’s serve to zero, but on his serve he committed two double faults at once. And then the Russian won four games in a row and led 5:1. At the same time, Daniil won the third game from the third break point, and in the fifth, having reached the break point, he immediately achieved his goal. After that, Hanfman brought his serve to nil, but then Medvedev requested a set, recovering a double break point during the game – 6:2. In the first game, the Russian outscored his opponent in game winners (14 vs. 6), although he had more unforced errors (7 vs. 4).

The second set, like the first, Medvedev also started with a break, and in the long second game, during which he went “exactly” five times, he left two break points – 2:0. Then the rivals took a game on the field, after which they exchanged breaks – 4: 2 in favor of the Russian. Then Daniil once again took the opponent’s serve, having made a triple break point at the second attempt, after which he archived the match without much difficulty: 6: 2, 6: 2.

Fun stat: Medvedev racked up eight aces but committed seven double faults. And his opponent had zeros in both columns.

This is how Medvedev reached the semifinals of the Rome Masters for the first time in his career. This is a repetition of his best result in “thousands” of gravel (after Monte Carlo-2019). In the 1/2 final, he will play the winner of the match Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece, 5)-Borna Coric (Croatia, 15). This match will also take place today, May 18. In the other semifinal, Holger Rune (Denmark, 7) will face Kasper Ruud (Norway, 4). Follow all the events in the “Championship”.
