We look back at the loss that changed Charles’ career forever.
On the night of June 11, the famous Charles Oliveira will attempt to return to the title race and close out the defeat of Islam Makhachev, which has long troubled the former champion. Charles’ opponent at UFC 289 is not an easy one: Beneil Dariush, who can impose competition on the Brazilian both on the hands and on the ground and deprive Oliveira of his usual trump cards.
UFC 289: Oliveira wants a rematch, Dariush has a chance at life. LIVE
Eight months ago, the same could be said about the title fight between Charles and Islam Makhachev. At first, only dissatisfaction was heard from Oliveira: that the fight would take place in Abu Dhabi, that he was stripped of his belt on the scales, that Makhachev did not deserve a title shot.
Makhachev’s opposition was in fact weaker than Oliveira’s resume: Thiago Moises and Bobby Green, who were defeated by Islam, against Chandler, Poirier and Gati among Charles’s men. The Brazilian warned Makhachev that it was dangerous for him to intrude on the ground up to the top jitser and confidently declared that the Russian would finish, but Islam did not care much. He calmly sparred with Khabib and repeated that he would decide the outcome of the fight on the ground.
Perhaps, already at that moment, the Brazilian broke psychologically, because in the end everything turned out exactly as the Russian predicted. Makhachev really outperformed his opponent in all aspects of the sport. Already in the first round he managed to shake Oliveira, and then he transferred two more times to Charles, depriving him of that space and completely dominating the octagon. Oliveira quickly realized that there was nothing to catch in this fight. Naturally, the fight ended already in the second round after the triangle at the hands of Islam – the world heard the name of the new champion.
Khabib’s heir became UFC champion! Makhachev tore the brilliant Brazilian
Makhachev’s undisputed victory seriously affected Oliveira. They met him halfway, offering an immediate rematch with Islam, but the Brazilian turned down the UFC’s offer, citing the fact that he was psychologically unprepared. What’s more, he was even given the chance to fight in his native Brazil, but this didn’t convince Oliveira either. And now Charles admits that he hasn’t reviewed that fight yet. Let’s see if Oliveira got out of the psychological hole and if he has enough strength to fight Dariush.
