The American team takes first place, but athletes from the Middle Kingdom are not far behind!
On Thursday, August 8, the 13th day of the Olympic Games, Russian athletes had the chance to win a second medal. Rowers Petrov and Korovashkov were second throughout the final race in the 500 m double-seater canoe, but in the end they could not keep up the pace and dropped out of the top three. Russian athletes, with a silver tennis player, are now ranked 71st.
The US team maintains its lead in the unofficial medal table with three days to go before the end of the Olympic Games. The Americans won three gold medals on Thursday (all in athletics) and could not let their main rivals from China get ahead. The United States has 103 (30-38-35) medals.

The Chinese, however, are not letting their competitors go. On the 13th day of the Games, they took home four gold medals: in weightlifting, diving, boxing and canoeing, in the same race in which the Russians were left without a medal. Now the athletes from the Middle Kingdom have 73 (29 – 25 – 19) awards.
More than 80 sets of awards will be handed out over the remaining three days of the Olympics. China has a chance of competing for the top spot, but the United States, given its lead in some team events, has a better chance.
Australia, with 44 (18 – 14 – 12) medals, maintained third place in the unofficial team ranking. France remains in fourth place (14 – 18 – 21), but Great Britain, South Korea and Japan are close behind.
